General
Information |
The 48th European Study group Mathematics with industry
(Studiegroep
Wiskunde met de Industrie) will be held from March 15th-19th 2004 at
the Faculty of Electrical
Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science of Delft
University of Technology.
The aim of the workshop is to bring together mathematicians and
commercial companies to tackle industrial problems. The workshop is
supported by ITW (Industrial and Applied Mathematics), STW
(Stichting Technische Wetenschappen) and NWO/EW, and ECMI (European
Consortium for
Mathematics in Industry).

Information
for Participants
|
There
is no registration fee for participants attending the workshop.
The organisation hopes that
many participants will stay in one of the hotels in Delft, since
this
will create a good and creative atmosphere. Some funds are available to
support
travel or accommodation for those unable to find any other source of
funding.
This support is limited and must be requested by sending an email to
the
organising committee (swi@math.tudelft.nl).
Note that you may be asked to share a room with another
participant.
Your timely registration before the workshop is
appreciated such
that we can make arrangements for the lunches, receptions and dinner,
especially hotel accommodation should be ordered weeks in advance.
To register for the study group and for hotel accommodation please fill
the following
online registration form and
return to the organizers.
Alternatively you may first download
the registration form and return it by fax or email after
completion to the organizers.
If you have any questions, please email the organizers.

How it
works |
At the beginning of the week, a
representative from each company
invited (5-7 companies in all) presents their industrial problem to the
participating mathematicians (approximately 60 or so). The academic
participants then allocate
themselves to the groups who work full-time on each problem over the
next
three days. By the last day, each group of mathematicians must ensure
that
their ideas are developed enough to collate them into a final
presentation
to the other study-group participants. The collaboration does not
necessarily
end at this point as the mathematicians must also write an article for
the
proceedings, which can act as a formal record of the work done for the
invited
company. This provides the possibility of encouraging further research,
leading
to new links between industry and academia.

Information
for companies |
Perhaps,
an
industrial problem from your company could be solved in our
study
group ?
We would be more than happy to visit you, at no cost and without any
need
for an immediate commitment, for an initial discussion about
formulating such
a problem. Almost all industrial problems have some mathematical aspect
to
them, although the mathematics is not always recognisable at first.
Indeed,
from our own experience, some of the most successful study group
problems
have not been well-defined in mathematical terminology at the start of
the
study group.
In the event that a suitable problem can be found and
your company
decides to participate, we ask for an employee of your company to
attend the entire study group week or to be available to the
mathematicians for questions. A
contribution of 1500 euros to the costs of the study group is also
requested.
